Roles and Training of Students

(3800 characters)

INSTRUCTIONS

Clearly describe the specific roles and responsibilities of students and research assistants, and indicate the duties, especially with respect to research, that they will be undertaking, as well as how these will complement their academic training. Consult the Guidelines for Effective Research Training in preparing this section of the application. These guidelines will also be provided to reviewers.

STRATEGIC ADVICE

While it may be beneficial to begin with a brief description of your overall student training philosophy, be sure to move quickly into a specific description of student involvement in the proposed project. It is not enough to say students will be involved in “research activities” – which ones? How will these tasks/responsibilities complement coursework/other training opportunities?

Ensure that contributions and tasks are appropriate for the academic level of participating students (undergraduate vs. Master’s vs. PhD vs. PostDoc).

Ensure that any request for student funding in your budget justification has been sufficiently justified here. Then, in your budget, you can remind reviewers of what they have already read (consider using a phase like “see Roles and Training of Students” in brackets).
